What is internet?
Also referred to as net or the web, is theconnection of networks. The Internet was initially developed with the intention of helping to develop the progress of computing technology by
linking the work being done by all the best academic computer centers.
History of Internet
It started being developed in the late1960's and transmitted its first message in October 29, 1969.
In 1993, the Internet experienced one of
its largest growths to date and today is
accessible by people all over the world.
The Internet contains billions of web pages created by people and companies from around the world, making it a limitless place to locate information and entertainment.
It also has thousands of services that help make life more convenient. For example, many financial institutions
offer online banking that enables a user to manage and view their account online.
Different terms in internet
As an internet user you might have seen different words or terminologies related to internet some you are familiar with but some you are not. The following are different terms used in internet and their meanings.
Search Engine
A search engine is a software that allows you to look for specific websites or information based on keywords, dates and other criteria.There are thousands of different search
engines available on the Internet, each with their own abilities and features.
Common examples of search engines
include Google, Yahoo!, Bing and Ask.
Because large search engines contain
millions and sometimes billions of pages, many search engines not only just search the pages but also display the results depending upon their importance.
Web browser
A Web browser is a program used to visit websites. It is considered as a software application that allows people to access, retrieve and view information on the internet.The information that may be “browsed” can be in the form of text content on a web page, an image, video, audio etc.
The most popular web browsers currently in use are Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera and Safari.
IP address
Short for Internet Protocol address, an IP address is an address of a computer or other network device on a network using TCP/IP. For example, the number "69.72.169.241" is an example of such an address.These addresses are similar to an
addresses used on a house and is what
allows data to reach the appropriate
destination on a network and the Internet.
There are several IP addresses that are
automatically assigned when you setup a home network. These default addresses are what allow your computer and other network devices to
communicate and broadcast information over your network.
Anyone who connects to the Internet is
assigned an IP address by their Internet
Service Provider (ISP) who has registered a range of IP addresses.
Domain name
When referring to an Internet address or domain name is the location of a website. For example, the domain name “google.com" points to the IP address "142.250.69.206", but it is easier to remember the Google's website is google.com instead of trying to remember the IP address.When creating a domain name, make sure you keep it simple and something that is easy to remember.
Web server
Is a Computer or collection of computers used to deliver web pages and other content to multiple users.HTTP
Stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol, is a protocol that enables communication between a web browser or a client and a web server. It is used as a pathway for transferring information between a web server and a browser.
HTTPS
It is an abbreviation for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure, this is a HTTP which is secured or encrypted. A website which uses HTTPS cannot be intercepted easily by the third parties who may try to steal the data. HTTPS works the same as HTTP but with security where the letter "S" stands for secure.
WWW
Stands for Word Wide Web, www means a particular website is public and is accessible to users through the internet.
Short for Electronic Mail, email is a message that may contain text, files, images, or other attachments sent through a network to a specified individual or group of individuals. The email address contains a username, @ sign and the domain name. For example mzalendoboy843@gmail.com, "mzalendoboy" is a username, the "@" sign devides between a username and the domain name, for this case "gmail.com" is a domain name.
