The word RICA stands for The Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication Related Information Act. This is a South African law that regulates interception of communications, it was been in force since January 2003.

Why RICA?

RICA was introduced by South African government for the security reasons as it aims to discover and prevent crimes. Thus for this reason the government passed the law that requires every SIM user in South Africa to register their numbers to RICA.

With Vodacom you are required to have the following before starting the registration process.

A SIM card
Proof of address/residence
A photo of your ID or passport
A phone with a camera

Vodacom RICA registration process

You can complete Vodacom RICA registration by following these simple steps below.

1. Download My-Vodacom app on Google play store or Apple App Store.

2. Open My-Vodacom app.

3. Tab "Chat to TOBi".

4. Provide all required information include a SIM card number, a photo of proof of residence, a photo of your ID or passport and your selfie.

5. To complete the process you will be required to record a short video of you saying a special password.

Your Vodacom SIM card will be activated after verification and you will receive a welcome message from Vodacom confirming your verification.

You can check your RICA registration status by sending (SMS) the word RICA to 31050 or by calling 082111.

Telkom has also made the registration process to be very simple as you only need to have the required information and following the registration process.

RICA registration for a Telkom SIM card requires you to have the following.

The SIM ICCID number which is located at the back of the SIM pack
A copy of RSA ID in PDF, PNG, JPEG or JPG
A proof of residence, this can be a utility bill or a bank statement
A phone or device with a camera because you will be required to submit a selfie.

Telkom RICA registration process

You can RICA a Telkom SIM card online by following these seven (7) simple steps below.

1. Visit the Telkom RICA website and click the “Start RICA” button. This will initiate the RICA verification process.

2. Fill in the required details such as your personal details (name, last name), your RSA ID number, and your SIM ICCID number.
You can find your SIM ICCID number at the back of your new SIM pack.

3. Provide further personal information such as your contact details.

4. You will receive an email and SMS, and a link to complete the RICA process.

5. Submit a copy of your RSA ID. This can be in PDF, PNG, JPG or JPEG format.

6. Submit your Proof of Residence. This will either be your utility bill, store account, or a bank statement.

7. You will need to take and submit a selfie that clearly shows your face to confirm your identity. This will complete the RICA verification process.
