What is job inventory?

Job or task inventory is a method used in analyzing jobs which involves listing the regular tasks performed or to be performed in particular jobs. The routine tasks which take place day-to-day are listed together with the description of each activity, however job inventory is not a job description, but is an overview of tasks and activities which forms a job and it can be used to create or refine the job description. The information for job inventory are collected from employees and their supervisors or managers through interviews, observations, questionnaires and case studies.

The characteristics of the tasks involved in job inventory method are: 
  • They utilize knowledge, attitudes and skills to be performed.
  • They have identifiable beginning and end points.
  • Their results are measurable accomplishments or products.
  • They are observable and can be determined through the performance.
  • They are performed in relatively short periods of time.
  • They are usually measured in time ie. in minutes or hours.
