Off-the-job training: Meaning and Methods

On-the-job and off-the-job training are the major types of employees training. Both aim at developing employees carrier by providing them with knowledge and new skills. Training helps organization to increase employees performance and overall organizational productivity, further more, it helps employees to gain new skills and techniques of performing jobs.

What is off-the-job training?

Off-the-job training or simply off job training is a training program which is done away from the workplace. Employees learn the processes and techniques of performing the jobs while are outside their working environments.


Methods of off-the-job training

There are various methods for training employees off job. These methods include lectures, case study, audiovisual, vestibule training, role playing and simulation. 


Lectures

One of the methods of training employees off job is through lectures method. This is a training method which is conducted in classrooms or lecture halls, whereby a trainer provide instructions to the trainees in a lecture form. Trainees may be given certificates after finishing their training.


Case study

Another best way of training employees off job is through case study. This is a method which involves studying jobs within the same organization or outside an organization and analyzing their problems by observing past experience. The trainees will have to write their conclusions about their findings.


Audio-visual

Another method for training employees is Audio-visual. This is an off job training method which involves learning through medias like videos, audios, podcasts and films. This method helps trainees to keep the memory of the information they have taught for longtime.


Vestibule training

This is a method in which trainees learn how to use new equipments, machines or tools which they will use in their actual job, but the training program is conducted outside of their workplaces.


Role-playing

This method is mostly used in customer care/services profession. Role-playing is an off job training method in which employees or trainees are acting to perform the roles just like they are in their real job.


Simulations

This is an off job training method in which employees are trained by using softwares or equipments which mimic the real world. Simulation method helps employees to learn how to handle the equipments they will be using in their actual jobs. This method is mostly used in the professions or fields which use very expensive or dangerous equipments to perform the job for instance pilots.
