Job rotation is a movement of employees within different jobs of the same level. Employees are moved from one job to another where they work for a certain period of time then are returned back to their previous job or taken to another job. In most cases, job rotation doesn't involve salary changes since employees are rotated in jobs of the same level. Unlike promotion which involves movement of employees from lower level to higher level.

Job rotation can be used as a training program, whereby the employees learn new techniques and skills while continuing performing their duties, this type of training is called on job training. Employees gain new experience and knowledge through performing new jobs and understand how jobs are performed and know the challenges faced in the other fields.


Job rotation is important to both organization and employees. Some advantages of job rotation include;

  • Helps to avoid boredom.
  • Helps to identify in which job an employee works better.
  • Helps to facilitate replacement for absent employees.
  • Helps to provide employees with new skills and experience.
  • Helps to increase working morale.
