Job characteristics


A job should be designed in the way that motivates the employees. The characteristics motivating job are skilled variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy and feedback.


1. SKILLED VARIETY

Monotony and repeatedly tasks can make the employees bored. In this case, a job must involves various activities which require variety of skills to perform so as to avoid boredom and increase motivation. 


2. TASK IDENTITY

This is all about full involvement of employees in performing the entire identifiable work with a visible outcome. In most cases, employees are motivated to perform the jobs that they identify with them from the beginning to the end. 


3. TASK SIGNIFICANCE

How a job is significant and how does it impact the life of people within and outside an organization also matters in motivating employees. Employees are highly motivated when they find that the jobs they perform are very important to their organizations and bring a meaningful impacts to others. 


4. AUTONOMY

This is a freedom of decision making, scheduling and completing the tasks using different methods. A motivating job must be autonomous, this means that it should give employees a freedom to input their ideas, decisions, and to do the job on their own ways. Usually employees do not enjoy to perform a job which doesn't promote freedom and flexibility. 


5. FEEDBACK

This is a comment on the level of performance offered by the employees. The main aim is to inform the employees how was their performance and where they should improve.


Conclusion

A motivating job raises the employees motivation, satisfaction and performance but also reduces absenteeism and turnover.
