Promotion

Promotion is a vertical movement of an employee from lower position to higher position in a job. Promotion is characterized by an increase in salary, authority, status and responsibilities.


Types of promotion in a job

There are four (4) types of promotion as listed below.

  • Horizontal promotion
  • Vertical promotion
  • Dry promotion
  • Open & closed promotion


1. Horizontal promotion

Horizontal promotion is a type of promotion with an increased salary but little or no change in the responsibilities. In other hand an employee is shifted in the same category in which there is no increase in responsibilities. Examples of horizontal promotion includes, promoting a lecturer to senior lecturer, promoting a manager to senior manager.


2. Vertical promotion

Vertical promotion is a promotion that involves change or increase in responsibilities, status and salary. Examples of vertical promotion includes, promoting a manager to director or promoting a marketing supervisor to marketing manager.


3. Dry promotion

Dry promotion is a promotion without salary increase. It involves increase in duties and status while a salary remains the same. Most of employees dislike this kind of promotion because it doesn't involve increased salary.


4. Open & closed promotion

Open promotion is when all employees in an organization are eligible for the particular position. Close promotion is when only small list of employees are eligible for the position.
