The roles of language in the society means a position the language holds in a society or community. This post is going to explain the six (6) roles of the language in the community.
1. Language as a medium of communication
Language used by human beings as medium of communication. Through language we can convey information and messages to others.
2. Language as a factor for social development
Language is used to transfer knowledge and skills amongst the people. The knowledge and skills shared helps people to improve their things.
3. Language as a factor for national identity
Language helps to Identify a nation or a group of people. For example Chinese language identifies China, French language identifies France, Spanish language identifies Spain etc.
4. Language as a factor for social stratification
Language can be used to differentiate people of the different classes. For example, language used by education people is usually different from language used by non-educated people. Other classes include people rich vs poor people, adults vs youths etc.
5. Language as a factor for unity
The people from the same community who speak the same language usually feel as one. Thus, in this case language unifies people.
6. Language as a factor for cultural reflection
Language reflects the things found within a culture of its users. For example, the language of the community that engage much in agricultural will have many words relating to agriculture.
