Meaning of language
Language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols used by human beings in communication.
Why language is a system?
A system is a combination of two or more things that work together to accomplish a certain task. For example a human respiratory system is made up of lungs, trachea, larynx, nose, pharynx, bronchi and diaphragm. These components works together to form the respiration system in a human body.
Language is a system because has several units such as nouns, pronouns, verbs, conjunctions and others, which together accomplish the communication process.
Why language is arbitrary?
Arbitrary means occurring without being planned or without a formula.
Language is arbitrary because the words used to name things occurred by chance, that's why every language has its own way of naming things. For example, in English, the organ responsible for sight is called "eye" but in French is called "yeux".
Why language is vocal?
Vocal is a human voice.
Language is vocal because we use voice to communicate.
Why language is symbols?
A symbol is a something that represent something else.
Language is symbols because the words represent or symbolise objects and ideas. We can use the words to refer something which is far away from us.
